“Prone [1 of 4, My Unemployed Life series]” (2011), satin & cotton thread hand embroidery on linen, 11” x 14”,
The hand embroidered My Unemployed Life series converted a fallow time of unemployment into thoughtful, humorous works based on the trappings of the work of “not working”. The series of 4 embroideries took over a year, 6-9 hours each day, over 90,000 stitches.

From Lost in Lace, just opened today in Birmingham, there are a whole selection of some very talented artists exhibited here. I couldn’t stop snapping pictures the whole time I was in there, some of the lace works are incredible. The exhibit is running until February so I think you should try to get and see it if you can! Go to the exhibit website for a full list of all exhibiting artists.
P.S. it’s free to get in which is even better.

By Joetta Maue, the overly talented curator and artist has made this amazing piece called Waking with you, it is a mix of embroidery, appliqué and painted fabrics. The posture and the expression make it have a picture perfectness, I think most people have woken up and lay in this position just wishing they didn’t have to get up.

“I developed a new technique that I call “mulched thread painting”. This involves customizing colors by cutting up bundles of thread…each bundle may contain up to 10 different colors. Cutting the bundles turns them into fibers that I then applique to a canvas that has already been roughed out with an acrylic underpainting.”
